If you are looking to expand your music collection into Arabic music, this is a good place to start. Fairuz is a Lebanese Diva who has been extremely poplular in the Arab world since the 60′s. She has had several songwriters during her career, each of which had a wide variety of styles to offer. She goes from Doumbek driven accelerated Belly dance style music to mellow 60′s styles, to disco-ey 70′s style, to Bossa Nova, to Arabic Lounge and then some. Everything from excited to happy to bittersweet to detached. This album is a compendium of some of Fairuz’ greatest songs on one disc. She is extremely talented and on par with great Singers like Sade and Modonna. The different phases of her illustrius career are captured. This is also AUTHENTIC Arabic music,
it’s not that coporate whitewashed pop crap that is a totally westernized sound with arabic lyrics. Give it a listen, it’ll expand your mind.

I purchased this CD as a father’s day gift. I found this by searching 1940′s music. My father, who was born in 1934, loves Faruz. I had no idea who she was, but made a great choice in purchasing this CD. He remembered seeing her on the beach when he was a child. This gift really made his day!

For someone who didn’t grow up in Lebanon, Fairuz might be a singer with an indescribable voice with songs that resemble little – if any – of what was produced in terms of music in the middle east.

To a Lebanese, Fairuz and the Rahbani brothers created an image of a Lebanon that few are certain ever to exist. The remote village, grape vines under the moonlight, people singing with no care in the world. Particularly during and after the end of the civil war (1975-1990), people became attached to this image of Lebanon that no longer existed, and because of that, Fairuz became the Lebanon that we always wanted. It’s probably hard to explain, but she represents Lebanon more than our flag does.

I’m including this introduction for this album, because you might say that this is the essence of the “early” Fairuz. The “newer” Fairuz came to revolutionize what Arabic music is about, twice, but that’s a subject to a different album.

Highly recommended album, specifically to non-Arabic speakers.

Fairuz is totally awesome! No words can completely tell about how much emotion is in there…her voice is inspiring…the lyrics are breathtaking…if you haven’t listened to Fairuz then you are missing something great–listen! Everything is so deep! and if you don’t understand Arabic that’s okay–you will understand the emotion…

If you’re interested in classical Arab music – or you’re interested in Fairuz – start here. Why?

    1. Habeytek bsayf – her most famous song, and one of the most famous songs in Arabic ever – is on this CD.

    2. Fairuz sings a sort of hybrid – classical Arabic music that is pretty heavily influenced by Western orchestral and military music. That makes her songs a little bit more accessible to the Western ear than songs by somebody like Oum Kalsoum.
